Plenty of apps can scan your plate. Then what?
We put Navilo Health next to 16 other apps: calorie scanners, the big old trackers, fasting timers, sleep apps and GPS trackers. Our scan is built on modern vision AI and reads a full mixed plate. In our view, the difference is what happens after the photo.
See the tableThe short version
Of the 17 apps compared here, Navilo Health is the only one that covers AI photo logging, GPS run and walk tracking, sleep and intermittent fasting in a single app. Every other app covers one or two of those four, which is why most people pay for three or four apps at once.
The photo scanners
Cal AI · Kalo · SnapCalorie · Foodvisor · Fitia · Bitesnap
Strong at reading a mixed plate from a photo. SnapCalorie stands out on micronutrient detail.
None of them track a run, a night of sleep or a fast.
The established trackers
MyFitnessPal · Lose It! · Cronometer · MacroFactor
Far bigger food databases and better micronutrient depth than ours.
Photo scanning is paywalled or missing, and none include an AI coach.
The single-job apps
Strava · Nike Run Club · Zero · Sleep Cycle
Strava and Nike own GPS, Zero owns fasting, Sleep Cycle owns sleep.
None of them know what you ate.
Navilo covers all 13 features in the table below, starts free, and is the only app here with streak freezes and buddy challenges for the weeks motivation drops off. It is not the deepest app in any single category, and the section under the table says exactly where it loses.

Six things the other apps do better
A table where one column is all green and nothing is conceded is not worth trusting. So here is where Navilo comes second, in our own words.
Smaller packaged-food database
MyFitnessPal has been collecting barcodes and restaurant menus for over a decade and nothing comes close to it. Our barcode scanner covers the common brands, but if you eat a lot of obscure packaged food or chain-restaurant meals, you will hit gaps we will not.
Less micronutrient depth
Cronometer tracks 80+ micronutrients and SnapCalorie pulls 30+ from a single photo. We cover calories, the three macros and the key micros. If you are managing a condition around specific nutrients, Cronometer is the better tool and we will say so.
No segments or leaderboards
Strava has segments, leaderboards, clubs and millions of athletes. We give you a live map, pace, splits and calories, and that is the extent of it. If competing on a local hill climb is the thing that gets you out the door, Strava wins.
No smart alarm or sleep staging
Sleep Cycle uses your phone microphone to wake you in a light sleep phase and analyses sleep stages. We log hours, sleep-talk clips and how sleep affects your hunger the next day. Better sleep science lives elsewhere.
No adaptive maths as sharp as MacroFactor
MacroFactor has the best algorithm on the market for adjusting your calorie target from your real weight trend. We adjust targets too, and ours is simpler. Lifters chasing precise recomposition will prefer theirs.
AI features use credits
Photo scans, the coach and meal plans run on AI, and AI costs money to run, so those sit on a monthly credit allowance. All the manual and GPS tracking is unlimited and free. Apps that charge one flat fee do not make you think about that.
The other photo scanners
Camera-first apps that read a plate the same way we do, and mostly end there.
Cal AI
Good at: The best known photo calorie app, and the one with the most published accuracy numbers.
Why us: Our plate scan is built on the same generation of vision AI and handles mixed meals too. What Cal AI does not do is anything past food.
Full Navilo vs Cal AI comparisonKalo
Good at: Tidy multi-item detection with portions you can edit. Very close to Cal AI.
Why us: Our scan handles mixed plates too. But it is still just a scanner, so nothing pulls you back after a missed week.
Full Navilo vs Kalo comparisonSnapCalorie
Good at: Built by ex-Google AI engineers. Pulls 30+ micronutrients from one photo, and the free tier is generous.
Why us: Great on nutrients, nothing on habits. No streaks, no coach, no activity of any kind.
Full Navilo vs SnapCalorie comparisonFoodvisor
Good at: Good European food recognition, plus optional programs with a real dietitian.
Why us: Human coaching costs extra and there is no fitness side at all. We include AI coaching, GPS runs and fasting.
Full Navilo vs Foodvisor comparisonFitia
Good at: The closest thing to an all-rounder here: photo and voice logging, meal plans, AI coaching.
Why us: No run tracker, no sleep, no fasting. And nothing like streak freezes or buddy challenges when motivation dips.
Full Navilo vs Fitia comparisonBitesnap
Good at: Free photo logging with a manual fallback. Simple and it works.
Why us: Logging is all it does. No coaching, no planning, no reason to come back tomorrow.
Full Navilo vs Bitesnap comparisonThe old-school trackers
Enormous food databases. Photo scanning came later, and usually costs extra.
MyFitnessPal
Good at: The biggest food database anywhere. Nothing beats it for packaged food and restaurant chains.
Why us: Meal Scan sits behind an $80/yr paywall and you still spend most of your time in a search box. We start with the camera, and start free.
Full Navilo vs MyFitnessPal comparisonLose It!
Good at: Dependable all-rounder with community challenges, and cheaper than MyFitnessPal.
Why us: Snap It asks you to confirm every guess, and there is no AI coach, run tracker or fasting timer.
Full Navilo vs Lose It! comparisonCronometer
Good at: Tracks 80+ micronutrients. If you need lab-level detail, this is the one.
Why us: No photo scanning, and it feels like data entry. We trade some of that depth for logging you will actually keep up.
Full Navilo vs Cronometer comparisonMacroFactor
Good at: The best adaptive calorie maths on the market. Lifters swear by it.
Why us: Manual entry only, no free plan, no photo scan. We adjust your targets too, without the spreadsheet feel.
Full Navilo vs MacroFactor comparisonThe habit and simplicity apps
Built around habits and fasting windows rather than exact numbers. Food and fasting only, in most cases.
Rex.fit
Good at: Clever idea: send a photo of your meal to a coach on WhatsApp. No app to open.
Why us: A chat thread cannot show macro rings, a weight trend, a run map or last night sleep. It also costs about $20 every month.
Full Navilo vs Rex.fit comparisonSimple
Good at: Friendly, fasting-first design that rates your meals instead of throwing numbers at you.
Why us: A meal score still leaves you guessing your real calories. We show the actual figures and keep logging quick.
Full Navilo vs Simple comparisonThe workout, GPS and lifestyle apps
Each of these is the best at its one thing. None of them knows what you ate.
Strava
Good at: The best GPS tracking there is, with segments, leaderboards and a huge community.
Why us: No nutrition at all. We put the run map and pace stats next to the food that fuelled them.
Full Navilo vs Strava comparisonNike Run Club
Good at: Free guided runs with excellent audio coaching and training plans.
Why us: Running only. Food, sleep, fasting and water are invisible to it.
Full Navilo vs Nike Run Club comparisonZero
Good at: The most popular fasting timer, with fasting-stage explainers and mood check-ins.
Why us: A timer with no food diary. When the fast ends it has no idea what you ate. We connect the two.
Full Navilo vs Zero comparisonSleep Cycle
Good at: Smart-alarm sleep analysis with sound recording. Better sleep science than anything else here.
Why us: Sleep on its own. We show it beside your food, workouts and streaks in one report.

What is the best AI calorie counter app in 2026?
Cal AI, SnapCalorie and Navilo Health all identify food from a photo. Cal AI and SnapCalorie stop at nutrition, so if photo calorie counting is all you want, any of the three works. Navilo Health is the one that also covers workouts, GPS runs, sleep, fasting, medications and an AI coach in the same app, on a free plan.
Which app tracks food and workouts in one place?
Most apps pick a side: MyFitnessPal, Cronometer and MacroFactor focus on nutrition, while Strava and Nike Run Club focus on activity. Navilo Health logs meals by photo, strength workouts with personal records, and GPS runs, walks and rides in one account, so your calories in and calories out sit on the same screen.
Is there a free alternative to MyFitnessPal Premium?
Yes. Navilo Health's free plan includes the barcode scanner, voice logging, macro targets, workouts, GPS tracking, water, sleep and steps, plus 10 AI credits to start (a meal photo scan uses 2), no card required. Premium adds 150 AI credits a month for the coach, meal plans and fridge scans.
Do I still need a separate running app?
Not for everyday tracking. Navilo Health records distance, pace, speed, calories and the route map for runs, walks and rides, with optional pace cues. Strava remains stronger for segments, races and a large social feed, so serious competitive runners often keep both.
How accurate is photo-based calorie tracking compared with weighing food?
A scale plus a barcode is always the most exact. Photo scanning estimates the foods and portions on the plate, typically landing within about 20% for a normal home-cooked meal, and you can correct any item before saving. In practice the faster method wins, because a log you actually keep beats a perfect one you abandon.
Can I switch apps without losing my history?
Your old app's history stays where it is, but nothing stops you starting fresh: targets are calculated from your age, height, weight and goal in a minute, and streaks begin from day one. You can also delete your Navilo Health account and all of its data from your profile at any time.
