The short version

Pick Cal AI if

You want the leanest possible photo-calorie logger and nothing more. It’s the best-known app of its kind for a reason.

Pick Navilo Health if

The photo is only the beginning: you also run or walk, you sleep badly sometimes, you fast occasionally, and you want one app, with a coach in it, that connects those dots. That’s the whole reason we built it.

01

Two apps born from the same idea

Cal AI deserves real credit. It took an idea people had been promising for a decade (point your camera at food, get calories back) and made it work well enough that millions of people use it. If you have seen a photo-calorie app on social media, it was probably Cal AI. It made this whole category exist.

Navilo Health starts from the same place. Open the app, snap the plate, and vision AI breaks it into items with calories, protein, carbs and fat. Mixed plates, half-eaten leftovers, that beige situation at the office party: both apps take a fair swing at it and land close most of the time. On the scan itself, we consider Cal AI a genuine peer, not a punching bag.

02

Cal AI is now part of MyFitnessPal

Worth knowing before you choose: MyFitnessPal bought Cal AI. The deal closed in December 2025 and was announced in March 2026, after almost a year of on-and-off talks. By then the app had passed 15 million downloads and around $30 million in yearly revenue, which is a remarkable run for something two high schoolers, Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack, started.

For now, Cal AI still runs as its own app with the same team, and MyFitnessPal has said it has no plans to fold it into the main product. The one change users have already seen is that Cal AI now pulls from MyFitnessPal’s food database, which helps with branded and restaurant items. Longer term, it’s fair to expect the two to move closer together, so if you are weighing Cal AI it may be worth reading how MyFitnessPal itself stacks up too.

03

What Cal AI gets right

Cal AI does one thing, and the focus shows. The app is fast, the flow from photo to logged meal is short, and it has published more about its accuracy than almost anyone in the category. It also costs around $30 a year, which undercuts most of the big trackers.

If your entire goal is "tell me what I just ate, quickly", and you already have other apps for running, sleeping and everything else, then Cal AI is a perfectly good choice, and plenty of people should make it.

04

How close does either scan get?

It’s the first thing people ask, and the answer is the same for both: neither app knows how much oil went into the pan. A photo gives a model the shape and surface of the food, and from that it infers portion size. On a plate of recognisable things like chicken, rice and broccoli, both land close enough that the weekly average is useful. On a stew, a smoothie or anything covered in sauce, both are guessing, and so are you.

That’s why the edit step matters more than the scan. Cal AI lets you correct a portion after the fact and so do we, and the people who get real value out of either app are the ones who take the extra three seconds when the number looks wrong.

05

The other ninety percent of the job

The photo is maybe ten percent of the job. The other ninety percent is what the number does to your week. Did you eat back the calories from your run? Did four hours of sleep push you toward the vending machine? Is this the third Tuesday in a row you stopped logging after lunch?

Cal AI can’t answer any of that, because it doesn’t know any of that. There’s no AI coach to ask, no GPS tracker for your runs and walks, no sleep log, no fasting timer, no weekly meal plan. It scans, it logs, it waits for the next photo.

Navilo keeps the scan and builds the rest of the day around it. A run tracked with GPS shows up next to the meal that fuelled it. Your sleep sits beside your snacking. An AI coach has all of it as context, so "why am I not losing weight?" gets an answer based on your actual data instead of a generic paragraph. And when motivation dips, because it always dips, streak freezes and buddy challenges are there to catch the missed week instead of punishing it.

06

Price, and the four-app problem

Cal AI runs about $30 a year. That’s fair for what it does. But most people who care enough to photograph their food also track something else, and that is where the math changes: Cal AI for food, Strava for runs, Zero for fasting, Sleep Cycle for sleep, and suddenly you’re paying for four subscriptions and checking four apps that have never heard of each other.

Navilo starts free, with an optional Premium tier. One app, one place your data lives, one picture of your health instead of four fragments.

If paying nothing at all is the priority, look at Bitesnap rather than Cal AI. It has done free photo food logging for years without a subscription.

07

So which one should you pick?

You want the leanest possible photo-calorie logger and nothing more. It’s the best-known app of its kind for a reason.

The photo is only the beginning: you also run or walk, you sleep badly sometimes, you fast occasionally, and you want one app, with a coach in it, that connects those dots. That’s the whole reason we built it.

Cal AI questions, answered plainly

Should I switch from Cal AI to Navilo Health?

Yes, if you want more than food logging. Navilo Health does the same AI photo scan of your plate, then adds an AI coach, GPS run and walk tracking, sleep, a fasting timer, workouts and weekly meal plans in the same app. Cal AI stays focused on the photo-to-calories step.

Which app is more accurate at reading a photo of food?

Both use the same generation of vision AI and land close on most plates, including mixed meals. Neither is exact, and both let you correct portions after the scan. We don’t claim to beat Cal AI on the scan itself.

Do I need to weigh my food with either app?

No, and neither app expects it. Both estimate portions from the photo, which is why the numbers are approximate rather than exact. If you want weighed-and-verified precision, an app like Cronometer with a kitchen scale is what you want.

Can Cal AI scan barcodes as well as photos?

Yes, packaged food works via barcode in both apps. Navilo also takes spoken entries, which helps for meals you can’t photograph, like something you already finished.

Cal AI is about $30 a year. What am I paying here?

Cal AI is roughly $30 a year. Navilo Health is free to start with an optional Premium tier, so you can log meals, run, sleep and fast without paying anything up front.

Does Cal AI track workouts, runs or sleep?

No. Cal AI has no GPS tracker, no sleep log, no fasting timer and no AI coach chat. If you want those, you end up pairing it with apps like Strava, Zero or Sleep Cycle. Navilo Health covers them in one place.

Where does Cal AI still beat us?

It’s leaner and more focused. The photo-to-logged-meal flow is very short, it’s the best known app in the category, and it has published more about its accuracy than most competitors. If food logging is all you need, that focus is a real advantage.

Can I switch from Cal AI to Navilo Health?

You can start logging in Navilo Health straight away, free, and keep Cal AI installed while you compare. There’s no import of past Cal AI history, so most people simply start fresh from the day they switch.
